Young Horse Foundation Programme

A structured 12-week start, then a year of consolidation. For owners who want their young horse trained slowly, safely, and in the right order, before they are ever asked to carry a rider. The groundwork here sets up everything that follows in ridden training.

Phase 1 · Weeks 1 to 4

Trust & Basic Handling

She accepts the handler as the calm decision-maker. All foundation handling becomes routine.

Phase 2 · Weeks 5 to 8

Desensitisation & Body Control

She does not lose her mind around the noise, gear, and traffic the world will throw at her. Her body responds softly.

Phase 3 · Weeks 9 to 12

Refinement & Confirmation

Everything from Phases 1 and 2 becomes reliable, fluent, and transferable to new contexts and handlers.

Sample week

Week 1: Halter, approach, basic leading

Phase 1 · Trust & Handling

Every session this week runs 15–20 minutes. Five days, one new exercise a day, every session ends on something she already knows.

  1. Day 1. Exercise: approach and halter on/off, 5 reps. Success: she lowers her head into the halter without raising it.
  2. Day 2. Exercise: halter and lead 10 metres straight, both directions. Success: she walks beside you on a slack rope.
  3. Day 3. Exercise: lead with a halt every 5 metres. Success: she stops within 1 second of your halt.
  4. Day 4. Exercise: lead from the off-side (right). Success: she doesn't drift or pin her ears.
  5. Day 5. Exercise: combine all of the above. Success: smooth, no resistance.

Common problems & fixes

  • Pulls forward · halt, back her up two steps, restart. Don't yank.
  • Won't move off · soft cluck, slight tap on flank with lead end. Reward the first step.
  • Fidgets at halt · ignore minor fidget; only correct movement of feet from the spot.

Weeks 2 to 12 + milestone checklists.

The same level of detail across all 12 weeks, plus the milestone tracker we use to confirm each skill is reliable before moving on. Shared with owners we've taken on so it stays a working document, not a copy-paste manual.

Months 4 to 12: maintenance & Phase 4 prep

After Week 12, the programme moves to maintenance. Each skill is revisited every couple of weeks. Light variation, occasional new handlers, and steady physical maturity through long paddock turnout. Around month nine, we introduce the saddle pad and surcingle in five-minute add-ons, then move into in-hand pole work and long-lining in straight lines, building toward backing at age three and a half.

Hard Limits

What we won't do at age two.

  • No riding before age three. No backing. No jumping, in-hand or otherwise.
  • No longing on tight circles. Growing joints take the damage.
  • No long sessions. Fifteen to twenty minutes, four to five days a week, every session ends on a small win.
  • Pressure-release based, never force-based. If the answer to "would she be happy to see me tomorrow?" is no, we did it wrong today.
